[Update] PS3 Hacker's can now Ban Legitimate Users and Unban Consoles?

As Sony finally begins to use their ban hammers against those who have jailbroke their consoles’, hackers have now found a way to Unban their PS3 console’s and ban legitimate users. Yes, you read that correctly. Hackers can now ban you in the process for doing absolutely nothing .

Website, PSX Scene is the first to report on user’s actually being able to do this.

From the forum post:

Hot off the press, and on the heels of Sony trying to find all the modded PS3 consoles, comes a funny story from SKFU’s Blog (an PS3 researcher/developer), along with a real way to UNBAN yourself, but watch out LEGIT PS3 owners, you could end up being banned by another user!

1) The bans are based on the users’ account and console ID’s.

2) We can modify all traffic sent and received by the PlayStation3

What if some skiddies start to modify their sent traffic to appear as another user and use backups?

The PSN servers would recognize the TOS violation and check the online user database for known connections based on the ID’s. The user and his consoles who really owns the ID’s would be banned.

Even a simple Windows application which goes through ALL ID’s may be possible. 24 hours and any console worldwide would be banned.

This should definitely be double-checked by SONY.

Now with these tool’s out, legit PSN users can be banned by the simple use of a program. We will not post the link to the forum post since we do not condone any use of these hacking tools at all on our site. But with the ablilty for hackers to ban and unban PS3 Consoles, what more can PSN user’s endure and what can Sony do about this now?

Picture Proof

We have been getting reports from multiple people that this is legitimate.

[UPDATE]

The Forum post on PSX Scene has been removed however this was NOT our original source. We’ll keep you up to date on the findings on this latest hack and update later to confirm if this is real or not.

I've been gaming ever since the good old Sega/Nintendo days but I recently I got into the gaming industry around 2006. Ever since then I've been with the PlayStation brand for a long time. I'm a dedicated Sony fan who loves to play games from start to finish whether they are good or bad. And I also enjoy learning more about the industry as a whole with the future ahead of us.

      Fake?

And wouldn’t you need someone else’s console ID to get their console banned from PSN?

      @ comments of illigitimacy,
I would just like to say that I have seen this hack in action, it does work, expect a video of it tomorrow, and it bans a legitimate user to unban a hacker, according to the way the program works. so yea this is legitimate. ugh… just like MW2. There’s still no fix, no patch, and it’s still going on. Sony just needs to make a new fucking system, so we can ignore the security problems pursuing, as hackers have no sense of self control to stop them from ruining anything. Look at the PC, for instance. There would be no viruses if hackers didn’t make them. There would still be good games on the PC, and hardware would cost less, because more people would play games on PC IF there weren’t pirates. But they are, and they always will. They won’t change, they don’t have any legitimate excuse, they’re just bad people. And bad people don’t know what they’ve done wrong, like Geohot. They’re criminals, the fuckin’ lot of them.
You know what the definition of madness is? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result. The hackers are doing the same thing. The pirates are doing the same thing. Nothing is changing. Prices aren’t dropping. Nothing is preventing piracy. So yes, it is a major problem on both sides, through the industry and the hackers/pirates. But the difference is there is a moral problem with pirates and hackers, where they don’t feel like they’re doing anything wrong by stealing something digitally–and the industry thinks that pirates can accept that. They can’t, they won’t, and they never will.
Hopefully a computer genocide will be created, and it will wipe out all these hackers/pirates–which is what Sony is attempting to do on the PS3. They’re failing miserably at it though. Sony, forget about killing with dignity, just nuke the bastards.

Yeah you can do this. I have the pkg file ready to install and use if Sony bans me. I use home brew and backup games that I have purchased. The program is simple it patches your PSID temporarily so you can log into PSN. You make a text file with the PSID you want to sub in. Then the program installed on your ps3 uses that I’d and patches it in.

I wouldn’t think that hackers would make a program like this for any purpose other than to un-ban their own consoles and get revenge on Sony employees by banning their consoles. the term “hacker” has bad connotations, but they aren’t out there to cause havoc. they’re out there to play games for free. Sony is obviously vilifying they because they want people to pay for games, but they really aren’t that bad. Sony should have known better than to try to take down hackers. They bay be able to hack defensively, but these “hackers” do it professionally, and have both the time and the motivation to get back at Sony for making the most of the product they bought. it was only a matter of time before they did SOMETHING to unban their consoles. being able to ban other consoles just happened to be an added bonus.

Hackers want to use the hardware they payed for the way they want to.
Script Kiddies use the tools written by hackers to annoy others.
Criminals use the tools to make money.

Same on PCs: If hackers wouldn’t find security holes, criminals would and steal your CC without you even recognizing it.

If Sony would have made the ban-process secure in the first place, no one would be able to ban anyone else… The only one to blame is SONY.

Same on PCs: If the software developers don’t secure there software they are to blame for the harm done to your PC by criminals.

Well – those here blaming the hackers haven’t understood what the *real* hackers taking part in this wanted. I say “real hackers” because the ones cracking games were crackers, not hackers. The hackers wanted to use their PS3 for Linux and homebrew stuff not pirated games. This was possible until a little bit more than a year ago when Sony decided to ban Linux with 3.21 (including the then officially supported Yellow Dog Linux). We (the tech community) told Sony back then that this was a really bad idea as it drew the attention of the hacker community towards the console. Well, they wouldn’t listen and got for their ignorance what they deserved – Fail0verflow delivered at the 27C3.
BUT: Their hack did *not* allow playing pirated games; this was the work of crackers which naturally used the work done by Fail0verflow.

Conclusion: Hadn’t Sony blocked the usage of Linux their system would have stayed more or less secure (the bugs were there anyway but the hackers didn’t care looking for them) and they would not have to try sue half of the Internet.

And those of you who curse hackers and want them do die and stuff: Hackers built the Internet, the very Internet you’re using just now. So shut the f* up.

I think you guys are getting angry at the wrong people. “Hackers”, who thanks to hollywood now encompass phreakers, crackers, coders, scriptkiddies, etcetc all under one name, kinda like calling all criminals blacks, are not even the guys you should be angry at. Sony decided to take away something that these people paid for, after the sale. False advertising, renigging on terms, take your pick, they screwed these people when they went back later and pulled VERY LARGE AMOUNTS of functionality.
These people are not your typical user, they do not have tons of money to spend and do not take kindly to getting screwed, and unlike 99% of you, they have the know-how to turn it around on someone. They took the system they paid for and were being told they could no longer use for what they bought it, and they started to delve into it, take it apart, reverse engineer it. They learned how the system works, how to get around the “security” Sony put in place and in the proccess found out just how unsecure that data really is. Your information, accounts, credit cards, etcetc all avaliable at their fingertips due to this terrible security. Well, just calling Sony and saying theres holes, who would block it and still screw these people over, are doing the only thing they can to GARUNTEE Sony will do something… and that is to create a ability to showcase just how bad security is on their system. If someone can sit at their house, and BAN someone else, that is as poor of security as you can possibly have.
These people are using radical tactics to COVER YOUR ASS, and you should be thanking them, not deamonizing them. Yes, there will always be a few asshats that will try to take advantage of a situation, there always is, but that 1% of the community cannot stand for the other 99%.

Take it this way, if Ford decided to put in a limiter to not allow your car to go over 45 mpg, becuase its more fuel efficent, even though you bought your car 2 years ago and it would do 145mph before, who would you be mad at? Now, if some “hackers” got pissed at this, and found a way around it, finding out that each car had the ability to track everywhere you were going, how fast, and record in car coversations, and to be sure it is fixed published these facts and how-to to the interwebs, again who would you be mad at? You would be mad at Ford is who you would be mad at, becuase that is EXACTLY what Sony has done. Stop pumping fists at “hackers” becuase you are too stupid to understand what they are trying to do to HELP YOU, and start being mad at the people who put YOU in the place you are in now in the first place. Oh… and also be angry at those 1% assholes who abuse the system too.. I think they call them 12 yr olds.

It’s amazing how many believe the FUD of Sony and even more amazing how many misunderstand/misrepresent what the initial hack was all about. If you’re mad at somebody, be mad at Sony for killing an advertised feature (they – as rumour has it – only added to evade some customs issues) and creating a crappy system (though that’s no first for Sony, anybody remembering that nice rootkit they gave all their customers, who had bought certain CDAs?).

Oh, and before you ask the next time for “all hackers to die”, consider what’d mean for you (hint: e.g. no more internet for you, as the infrastructure was/is developed/maintained by hackers). Though most of the commenters above seem to get the terms cracker and hacker confused.

I think that a lot of commentors are missing out the fact that if all consoles could be banned, sonys protection is worthless. And if they get banned Sony couldn’t use their protection anymore. So this will lead to all consoles beeing open. Another therory is sony made this possible to force all users to patch their console via usb, leading to a new protectionmechanism without those early flaws.

I love how everyone in these comments are complaining about the “hackers”, when in fact this is all Sony’s fault.

Sony shipped the PS3 with OtherOS, which allowed users to run Linux on their PS3. When Sony removed OtherOS, the Linux users went to work finding a way to install Linux (as Linux users do). When they cracked the PS3′s encryption and keys, they only did it so they could return the Linux functionality to the PS3. However, this also allowed “pirates” and “hackers” to do many other things.

If Sony never removed OtherOS, the PS3′s security would have never been compromised, and this whole mess could have been avoided. The so-called “hackers” really aren’t as technical as you think they are. They most likely have little understanding of the PS3′s actual inner workings. They are just using the methods provided by the Linux users that Sony pissed off.

You’re kidding me! Hackers are bad, because they have in mind, that maybe it should be not okay that one single company lives on its god-delusion and tries to push up prices according to “I sell a console, I rule over all your data and I will decide if you are able to play or not!” Come on! Is there any X-Boxer out there complaining and wining about hackers? No. So…problem seems to be Sony on its head-through-the-wall-trip, not the ability to trick their software fences. And I can tell you, if you just calm down for a sec and think about it: Wouldn’t there be a melting pot of new things and ideas and crazy stuff running on your console if it would be open-source? Maybe! But if no one has a problem with a company playing god and if it doesn’t come to your mind that this “god”-mode will also comprise absolut content control and in that way maybe someday someone from sony will tell you s’ckers: “No man, violence and crime is bad in games. You are not allowed to play God of War III anymore, because it seems that you will become a bad little Columbiner, we have to parent you!”
Oh man…you little snorty midgets…go home and cry!

I just find it amazing that some people can jump to such crazy conclusions without actually taking into consideration the seriousness of what it is they’re saying. What this article is suggesting is that hackers now have direct access to ban someone else’s PS3 for no reason at all, essentially breaking a product that someone paid £300 for.

If that were actually true, if there was even the slightest CHANCE of it being true then not only would every newspaper and news broadcast in the WORLD have it as their top story, warning people not to buy a machine that is under someone else’s control but Sony would be forced by government law to recall EVERY SINGLE PS3 CONSOLE from store shelves until the problem is permanently fixed. Under the consumer protection act it is illegal for Sony to sell a machine that can be remotely “Broken” by hackers.

So yeah, excuse me if I happen to have my doubts over the legitimacy of this claim. Either Sony are about to issue a worldwide recall of PS3′s all over the world or this “Rumour” is total BS.

      @Tom Ato

This is legitimate. You misinterpret the information.

It’s not that users can outright ban anyone they choose, the point is that any person with a modified ps3 can alter their Console ID.

You could, by sheer chance, be banned for nothing if someone manages to use your ID for piracy.

If you don’t believe this is real, I suggest you download charles, ps3dns and get yourself a 3.55 CFW’d ps3.

@Biff – Comparisons to 360 are meaningless. Besides different technology, 360 has hardware-level checks. PS3 does not, and it’s security has been broken. Nothing Sony does on a software level will ever hold up including the rootkit in the current firmware.

Whether or not this thing is real, I dunno. I kinda want to believe it is but I’m extremely surprised PSX-Scene would remove the discussion thread regardless. Considering I’ve seen them remove several topics in the last few days, many of which were legit and reported in mainstream news, I have a feeling they are now operating under fear of Sony. Remember, they were the last to report on MFW when they’re usually THE source (their words). Even the regulars and mods there are acting suspicious… they know the PS3 is wide open and anything is possible but now they’re basically telling users that future firmware is unhackable and discouraging them from running MFW. Seems awfully unlike their style.

If sony hadn’t gone all out against GeoHot, this wouldn’t have happened.

      Well, IN YOUR FACE SONY.

Although I do wish innocent users do not get affected.

Oh dear…..it looks like my braindead hillbilly son is on here impersonating people to make up for the fact that his parents beat him every day and are stupid and unemployed. Wake the fuck up you inbred gaylord.

I would like to apologise to everyone on the forum for my son’s overall gayness and lack of intelligence, the reason he likes to make up user names to try and impersonate people is that he’s a braindead retard who get’s bullied at school, also, his overusage of the word “Fuck” is due to him being raped multiple times by his father. Boy am I dissapointed that I raised such a retard, oh well……I guess that’s what I get for doing all that crystal meth while I was pregnant. Darn………..

Either Microsoft is about to issue a recall on ALL Windows devices because selling something that l33t hax0rs can break in to is illegal) or hackers can’t really break in to my home PC and I’ve been paying all this money to Norton every year for nothing…DURRRRRRR

“Although I do wish innocent users do not get affected.”

There are no innocent users of the ps3. Everybody knows Sony is evil, sells a closed drm’d console. Anyone who supports such things by byuing them is not innocent.

@constantine Why would you give a shit??? Only the hackers care about closed drms. I have a ps3 (unhacked), I paid for it and the games I own…..The main and the real use of a ps3 is to play games I legitimately buy….What dont you people use a f**king PC if you want more control and you have the freedom to do so. Are you a cheater who put the INNOCENT players in disadvantage or you just wanna use a device for more features, then move to the PC, have u guys heard about PCs, they can also do magical things.
